Exhibition "Forgotten Peace"
Pax et Bellum would like to invite you to the opening of the exhibition “Forgotten Peace”, Saturday November 22 2008, at 18.00 in the Peace Museum at Uppsala Castle.
In presenting an exhibition about the complicated issues facing societies in the wake of conflicts and wars, our aim is to help the visitor in taking a first step towards a deeper understanding of these issues’ complexity, and further suggest what resolutions are presently at hand.
This exhibition is mainly aimed at presenting these lines of thought to high school students, with hopes of sparking interest and involvement in these crucial issues.
We hope to see you there on Saturday!

On the frontline of conflict deep inside Burma, this documentary follows ethnic relief workers as they aid internally displaced people suffering under the Burmese army. Focusing on a female medic and a pastor/human rights cameraman, the film reveals a people who have maintained their dignity and hope for peace, despite the odds. The Karen, an indigenous people, is the largest of minority groups participating in the insurgency against the military regime. Aid agencies estimate that up to 200,000 Karen have been driven from their homes during decades of war, with 120,000 more refugees from Burma, mostly Karen, living in refugee camps on the Thai side of the border. This documentary was filmed on relief missions with the Free Burma Rangers. Matt Blauer is a filmmaker focusing on human rights in South East Asia. His work has been screened in remote villages but also before the US Congress and the UN.

Annual Member Meeting & Election New Board
On September 15, Pax et Bellum invited its members to attend the Annual Member Meeting and the (re)election of the board for the academic year 2008/2009. The parting board addressed the financial situation of the association and reported on the main activities that were organized the preceding year. The evaluation was followed by the election of the new board. A diverse group of people is now looking forward to make up an inspiring program for the next year! You can find our full names in about us. The minutes of the meeting you can download here.
Theme: Forgotten Conflicts / Forgotten People
We have decided to focus on a specific theme every semester. In that way we can cluster several events such as films, lectures and seminars together and therefore dig a little deeper into the topic. The first theme of this year will be Forgotten Conflicts / Forgotten People. What do we know about the Western Sahara or the Nakorno-Karabach conflict? And did we ever think of the participation of children in peace processes? Do you also believe that these media-remote topics deserve more attention? Feel free to share your ideas - and hands! - on this topic with us. Contact Thimna at 073-6954437or thimna.bunte@googlemail.com or Ayca at 073-6831743 or aycauygur@gmail.com.
Peace Museum Exhibition

During this semester Pax et Bellum will cooperate with the Peace Museum at the Uppsala castle in making a temporary exhibition capturing aspects of the forgotten conflicts/forgotten people theme. If you are interested in planning and producing the exhibition itself as well as the surrounding lectures and activities, please join us at our next planning meeting (see upcoming events). If you have any questions, contact Markus at 070-2835534 or mjp.forsberg@gmail.com.
Pax et Bellum Films

In cooperation with the Peace Museum we are able to screen films and documentaries in their comfortable little cinema. We will organize screenings that are related to the theme, the exhibition or one of our other events. On several Sunday afternoons we will work together with the Utrikespolitiska Föreningen (Uppsala Association of International Affairs). We aim to present the films in combination with a short lecture, a panel discussion or Q & A session afterwards. Are you interested in participating in this process, contact Suzanne at 076-4197559 or e-mail suzannehoeksema@hotmail.com. The first meeting will soon be announced on the website.
